Blog ? for April 11-15

Now that you are almost finished writing your children’s book, think about what abstract noun best summarizes the theme of your book.  (For example, Jackie Robinson= bravery, Gertrude Ederle= determination, Nubs= love)

Explain why you chose the abstract noun and give actual quotes (2 minimum) from the person to help prove your point.  Write at least 150 words to make your point.

(There is a list of abstract nouns on the homework page in case you need some assistance.)

I would say Peg Kerhet is brave and confident. Peg is brave because going through an experience like getting polio is very extreme. Throughout the experience you are told many frightening things, like, “You are paralyzed from the neck down.” Or, “for this play you must walk on your own holding on to him.” Also, “you have 3 types of polio, bulbar, respitory, and spinal, this is very serious.” Or, “today you are going to try and stand on your own.” Lastly, “you can walk, try.” This shows Peg’s complete bravery because you might think on a regular daily basis I stand and walk easily, but with polio it is nearly impossible. It is amazing how brave Peg was, in such a terrible year.

Peg Kerhet was also very confident in herself that one day she would walk. One day she will come out of the hospital. Some examples of this are, “Peg, one day I want you to come back and walk for me,” said Dr. Bevis.
“Of course I will said Peg I will be back here to show you in no time!”
Another example of Peg’s confidence is when Alice (her roommate) thought she couldn’t sing in front of an audience in the play, Peg said “Alice, just pretend that your singing in front of me, and only me sing your heart out like you do.” Also when Peg said, “small steps, heel, toe, heel, toe, you can do it, right after left.” She said this to herself when she was taking her first steps. Peg is very confident in every way and shows that by overcoming polio.

The abstract noun that most describes Peyton Manning is talent. I chose this because Peyton has a lot of talent. For example he has set many pro and college records. People think he is the best Quarterback to live. Some quotes he gives are “People think I am all about Numbers but for me it is all about winning” This shows that he is talented because if you’re confident about your self you are talented. Another Quote he gave is “ Pressure is something you feel when you don’t know what your doing.” This shows talent because talented people know how to handle pressure and what it is. Peyton also said “ it takes 20 years to build a reputation and 5 minutes to ruin it. This shows talent because he got a reputation in only like 4 years and still hasn’t ruined it.

    • My biography is about Muhammad Ali. He is considered to be the greatest boxer of all time. I would describe it using the word determination. The whole moral of the story, his story, is that you should stick with your dreams and don’t let others put you down. The whole book Muhammad was determined to be a legendary boxer. That is why I chose determined.

My biography is about Anthony Horowitz. He is an English author who wrote 57 books. He was born in Stanmore Middlesex England on the 5th of April 1955. He went to school and didn’t like it but he was good in school. He really loved his mom. He didn’t understand his dad. When his dad died Anthony Got all his notebooks these notebooks were filled with codes and secret things. This is another thing Anthony was inspired by.
To describe my biography in a word I’d use the word determination. I’d choose this word because his conflict was should he continue writing books or not. He’s been reading and writing since he was 5. That is why I used the word determination. I didn’t use anything epic because he didn’t face any physical challenges or for that matter he didn’t do anything epic. I can’t really emphasize any more about this.

I think that an abstract noun to describe John Wilkes Booth is cleverness. He could always figure out a way to get out of a sticky situation. An example of this is when he needed to get over the bridge and go to Maryland. The bridge was closed and the officer would not let him over. Booth knew he had to think of some thing fast or the manhunters would find him. He said “I am going home home to Charles county. I left late so the moonlight could guide me.”
He also claimed he did not know the bridge closed. Another time was at the Garret’s house and needed a place to stay. He pretended that he was a wounded confederate soldier who needed to rest. The Garrets believed it completely and never thought it was suspicious. This was accomplished by the help of real confederate soldiers who said to the Garrets “This is a wounded confederate soldier that we want you to take care of for a day or so. Will you do it?” These quick moves by Booth saved him from being caught for 12 whole days.

I would probably say that determination best describes my book, Heroes of the Environment. In Erica Fernandez’s part of the book, she stops a huge natural gas proposal taking place in her hometown, Oxnard California. While she was doing this many people thought that there was no possible way to do this at all, but she still tried any way. She had just come from Mexico, barely being able to speak any english, but she still pushed on. She also had to make a speech in front of the governor of California, even though the project was about to start. But when she finished, she had completely convinced him. One quote was “The word on the street was that there was absolutely nothing we could possibly do”. But one quote that really got her back up was “When i heard this i was shocked. What if there was a leak or an explosion? People could get killed!”

I would say that Oprah represents success and determination in my book. I chose determination as my abstract noun because, in the book, Oprah is determined to prove herself to the world and show them that African Americans are as good as anybody else. Even though she was scared out of her mind, Oprah was still determined to go live on The Oprah Winfrey Show and prove her point. Even when she wasn’t treated well because of being black and could’ve just dealt with it, she was determined to make that pain come to an end. That’s why Oprah represents determination.

I chose success because Oprah is the perfect example of a “rags to riches” story. She started out as a poor child living in the “deep south”, being teased because of the color of her skin. Now, because of all of her determination, Oprah is one of the richest people in the US. Oprah once said, “What God intended for you goes far beyond anything you can imagine,” which is an example of her success and how she never thought she would be so successful. Also, she said,” I always knew I was destined for greatness.” That’s why I chose success as my other abstract noun.

Adeline Yen Mah in Chinese Cinderella= hope
I chose this abstract noun because Adeline went through a lot. Her stepmother and father didn’t care about her. They treated her unfairly. The only ones who actually cared about her were her Aunt Baba and grandfather. But the whole time Adeline had hope. Adeline never gave up and always tried her hardest.
Another reason I chose this abstract noun is because in one part in the book Adeline told her grandfather how miserable she was in boarding school and how she just wanted to give up but Adeline’s grandfather answered back ” Don’t talk like that! You mustn’t talk like that ! You have your whole life ahead of you. Everything is possible!……..” This reminded Adeline not to give up and that maybe there was still hope. In this entire book Adeline is constantly trying to have hope.
In another part of the book Adeline had just asked her father if she could go to collage and her father agreed. Adeline was thinking “My heart gave a giant lurch as it dawned on me that he was agreeing to let me go. How marvelous it felt to simply be alive!” This represents hope because all Adeline’s troubles had just gone away and she had more hope for the future than ever before. Adeline was a very hopeful person!

One word that describes Helen Keller best is original. She was very unique and outgoing, she always spoke or (finger) said her mind. Though she went to college she had her own views on it “College is not the place to go for ideas’” she once said. One of the things she was very defensive about was her disabilaties, they got in her way but he did not always see them in a bad way. “I can see, and that is why I can be happy, in what you call the dark, but which to me is golden. I can see a God-made world, not a manmade world.” When she was little which many people did nto know about her was that she was normal and she was blind and deaf because she got sick. “The beginning of my life was simple much like very other little life. I came, I saw, and I conquered as the 1st baby in the family always does.”

  9. An abstract noun that describes Eleanor Roosevelt’s life was all about is self-confident. This is because as a child, Eleanor’s mother always made her feel ugly. Her mother was very beautiful and well known. Eleanor was ugly and the way her mother looked at her and talked to her made her feel even uglier. This made her very self conscious and her self confidence level very low. Her father, on the other hand, took her every where. He taught her how to ride horses, read poetry to her, and told Eleanor about his travels. He made Eleanor feel very good about herself. When she went to boarding school, she was the most popular girl there because she was not afraid to talk to the teachers and always spoke her mind. All the other girls admired her. When Eleanor got married, Franklin Roosevelt’s mother took total control over her life and her children. Franklin’s mother arranged the furniture in their house, spoiled her children, and scolded Eleanor for not doing things her way. When Franklin was running for his fourth term as president, Eleanor knew that Franklin had a big chance at losing, but she convinced him to go on a speaking tour. This made Franklin win his fourth term, and it was all thanks to Eleanor. She was self confident once again.

Dr. Seuss’s story about publishing his first book would probably represent ambition. I would choose this abstract noun to describe his story of when he published his first book because in the story, he strives to get his goal of publishing his book, working long hours, and even when he was rejected, he kept trying and trying. An actual quote from him was, “Don’t cry because its over, smile because it happened” which means he learned from what happened and improved. Another one of his quotes was,“I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I’ve bought a big bat. I’m all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!” This meant that whenever trouble came along, like not getting his book published, he was ready. He tried to publish his book 27 times, improving his book more and more each time, and not giving up when he was rejected. He also learned from his mistakes to help him make the book better. In the end, his friend from college published his book, and Dr. Seuss published his first book. If he had not kept on trying, he wouldn’t be where he is today.

Determination, and Creativity best describes Orville and Wilbur. This abstract noun best describes the Wright Brothers, because they tried to figure out the mysteries of flight. The Wright Brothers began building their first glider in the late 1800’s. They had the idea of building their first airplane, because Otto Lilienthal died pursuing flight. From then on they would work, and work on this airplane while they ran their small bicycle shop in Dayton Ohio. They went to Kitty Hawk a tiny beach were they would test their glider. It failed. The brothers thought it needed power, so they said why not we put a motor on the airplane. That would give it some power so they went back and worked and worked. People thought they were fools. “Wilbur and I could hardly wait for morning to come to get at something that interested us. That’s happiness!” These brothers would not stop; they were going to show people that flight was not impossibility. In 1906 the Wright Brothers had completed the glider that was now called an airplane, because it had a motor. They were ready to test the airplane. They fired the engines up and took off. Everybody for the first time saw a person flying in the air. I came in for landing. I landed. We did it. “Flight was generally looked upon impossibility and scarcely anyone believed in it until he had actually seen it with his own eyes.”

I think a word to describe Helen Keller would be determination. She showed people that if you gave her a challenge then she would take it on and face it. She conquered her challenges without eyesight and hearing. When colleges didn’t want her or though she wouldn’t be able to go to college, she showed them they were wrong. She was six when she finally realized that everything had a name and she commented later on that it was like “Coming back to life after being dead…” Using her fingers, Helen could find out things others couldn’t. When her mom asked her how she said, “I think.” When she learned of blind and deaf people being able to speak she decided to learn. No matter how hard it was going to be she was determined to learn to speak. When she was an adult, she had very little money, so she toured and gave speeches to earn money. Her whole life, Helen worked her hardest learning and trying to help others. She never gave up.

I think the on word to describe Marco Polo is duplicity. His book was so sketchy and questionable that it raised an enormous amount of publicity. If I had to pick one abstract noun to define my character Michael Jordan it would be determined. I would pick determined because when all odds were against Michael he proved the doubters wrong. Growing up Michael believed he was ugly and was often bullied about the way his large ears stuck out from his head. Also as a sophomore when Michael tried out for the varsity basketball team he didn’t make it. In my book it says “Michael cried himself to sleep” after finding out he didn’t make the team. Also Michael turned the bad news into a motivation. He spent countless hours practicing every shot and also scrimmaging his brother Larry. In his life he definitely shows that practice makes perfect! I definitely admire Michael because of his hard work on and off the court. I think he is determined because overcoming all of those problems is not easy.

I think one word that would explain the USA Olympic Ice Hockey Team would be courage. They were going into the game against the soviets without knowing each other, without even playing together at all, and were all very young. It took a lot of courage to go out and play the unbeatable soviets. They had not lost a game in four years and Team USA was definitely the underdogs and they were not planned to win. All the players knew this and it made it very courageous to go out on the ice and give it their best effort.

I would describe Adeline Yen Mah as lonely. I would because Adeline didn’t have a real mother throughout her life. Also, she had no shoulder to lean on. Her whole family was cruel to her and she had no one to trust. Her brother fed her much loved friend and pet duck PLT to her cruel dog. Adeline could also be described as independent. An example of this is when on Adeline’s first day of school; no one came to pick her up. It started to rain and she had no idea where her house was. She started walking home, but was pelted down with rain.
One quote that could back up the fact that Adeline is lonely is when her sister told her that “’Aunt Baba and Mama used to be best friends. A long time ago, they worked together in a bank in Shanghai owned by our grandaunt… But then Mama died giving birth to you. If you had not been born, she would still be alive. She died because of you. You are bad luck.’” I think this shows that she’s lonely because it explains that she has no mom and that her sister doesn’t even love her and considers her bad luck. This is a quote that explains how independent Adeline was on her first day of school. ‘Trembling with fear, I realized that no one was coming to pick me up. Too embarrassed to knock or draw attention to myself, I walked tentatively out into the Shanghai streets. Surely, if I try hard enough, I will remember my way home.” This makes her independent because she did all of this at a young age.

An abstract noun that best describes Maria Tallchief is determination. Whenever she thinks that she won’t be able to fill in and do as well as an understudy for a head dancer, she tries her hardest; not giving up, and ends up getting praised in that morning’s newspaper for her gracefulness. From trying to calm down her father to doing a huge ballet and being ill a few days before, she never gave up.

Maria is determined because she always ends up succeeding when she doubts herself because she believed in herself and didn’t give up. For example, when she suddenly became ill right before a very special ballet that her husband choreographed just for her, she flew out of her bed, whipped off the covers and said, “I can’t rest, I must dance!” That showed how much she was committed to her dancing and didn’t want to let anyone down. Also, when Maria was in the middle of a very important role, she fell down. “I was mortified. There was nothing I could do about it, so I got right back up and kept dancing.” She said. You can tell that she was determined to keep the audience entertained and keep the show going.

And abstract noun that best describes Edward teach or Blackbeard is passion. Edward hated his job as a worker at an imports and exports organization in Spain. All Edward did was haul boxes onto ships and off ships. So Edward decided to become a pirate because that is what Edward loved to do best. Edward had always wanted to become a pirate since he was a little boy. “I don’t do something because im made to because I love to,” exclaimed Edward as he set off on his journey of quitting his job. “This is illegal, this is an outburst, this is wrong,” shouted Great Britain as they got more and more mad at the disruptions of Edward out on the water. Edward just responded with more of what he loved to do. “I love to be a pirate because im free from hard labor, taxes, and free from my priorities!” Edward exclaimed.

One word that describes my book on Elvis Presley is success because he grew up in a very poor family and he was able to become one of the most famous, wealthiest people in America. Elvis introduced a whole new type of music to people and everyone in the country knew who he was. “Yes, Elvis is a phenomenon. He’s one of the most curious and interesting phenomena in American music history. Years after his death, people are still listening to, marveling at and obsessing about Elvis Presley, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll”. Just the fact that his nickname was the King of rock ‘n’ roll shows you that he was a big success. “His life was storybook stuff, transporting him from rural poverty to international fame. One year he was driving a truck for $42 a week and two years later he was making millions and driving a fleet of Cadillacs.”

I think that the abstract word that best describes my book “Chasing Lincolns Killer” is bravery. This is because in it he has to be brave in the face of danger. One quote “can I do it, there is a lot that could go wrong” shows he is scared. He has to overcome the fact that so many awful things could happen to him if he gets caught. He deeply despises the north though so he has to make the decision. He chose to risk it and shoot Lincoln. In his mind it was worth it because the dictator of the north (Abraham Lincoln) was killed. In every one else’s mind it was a horrible thing to do. Another quote “let’s see the newspaper I want to see how they described me” shows he was very proud of what he did. It was in my mind extremely brave but also seriously bad and he paid the price. After 12 days of being free he was shot and killed while being trapped in a barn.

One word that best describes Jackie Robinson is bravery. I think this for a few reasons. One is because he grew up without a father and lost a brother when he was in college. Another is because he grew up in a time of segregation and had to cope with the unfair circumstances that it brought along with it. Lastly, Jackie had to deal with the taunting and racism that came along with being the first African American to play in the MLB ( major league baseball) which is why Jackie could be called brave. One quote that Jackie had was “I was overestimating my stamina and underestimating the beating I was taking.” This showed how hard it was for Jackie on the field. Another was “It could have a chain reaction throughout the world – with other with other players agreeing to unite in a strong bid to keep baseball white.” Jackie said this after a team refused to play his team because he was black which shows how brave he must’ve been to withstand this hate from other players.

One abstract noun for Steve Jobs is intelligent. Even though in my book they keep describing Steve Jobs as a visionary. I would say this of Steve Jobs because in the book is says “She seemed to understand him. She recognized that he was unusually bright even though his work did not show it. ” This person who understood him was Imogene Hill. Another quote is “The teacher’s plan was so successful that the school recommended Steve skip two grades so he could start learning a foreign language.” All of these quotes really show how you that someone might not have the normal smart, but have smarts in a different and weird way!!!! Steve Jobs didn’t grow up having all the electronics in the world. He went to a few kid’s classes about them and learned all about them. Then later in life he didn’t think his career was going to shape around them. A quote by Guy Kawasaki was “Medicine will cure death and government will repeal taxes before Steve will fail.” This is means Jobs doesn’t give up and Jobs is down to the bone smart

They are really scared on the first day of school because they think everyone is only going to like them because they are the first daughters. They just want to be normal but on the first day of school they are escorted by a police car. They get really upset because if anything that is not going to help them make friends. “Malia do you want to come to my house today?” Kate asks. “Sure,” Malia replies. “Why don’t we play basketball,” Jack and Suzie ask Sasha. “Good idea,” Sasha replies. This is why I think Malia and Sasha have true friendships. They are also brave to make a lot of new friends and go to public school where no one is like them.

One word that definitely describes Katharine Wright is indecisive. In my book, The Wright Sister, the two main moments are when Katharine’s forced to make a decision. For example, my climax is when Harry proposes to her, and she can’t make up her mind. She had said, “If I say yes, Orville will hate me for life, and I couldn’t imagine him living by himself, and if I say no, my dream of having a new family of my own would disappear.”
Katherine also always had people make the decision for her. For instance, my inciting moment is when Katharine is forced to make the choice of quitting teaching to travel with her brothers through Europe and be like their “secretary”, or stay as her life is now, and not help her brothers out. When this decision came around, she wrote a letter to her dearest friend Magaret, having her make the choice for her. In Katharine’s letter she had wrote, “You know I cannot make decisions, therefore I consult you to choose for me. I will do as you say, so please choose wisely.” This just proves how Katharine is not the person to come to when a big decision is on the hand.

The Word that summarized my book is determination. I choose this word because even though Harry Houdini broke his ankle in a show he kept going until the end of the show and was rushed to the hospital. The show before he died he was diagnosed with appendicitis and still went on with the show until the end where he was rushed to the hospital and then died because the appendicitis had developed to much during the show. He was known as the “king of handcuffs” because he could escape handcuffs and he was determined to do something different with his life and he did. Going from “I ain’t got nothin up mah sleeves” to a legend of magic is pretty huge and because he was determined not to work in a office in his life and do something unique

If I had to choose one word for my character, Walt Disney, I would choose the word “dream”. I would choose dream because Walt never gave up on his work. He would work long and hard to make everything perfect. But along the way, he would need a few pep talks since he would sometimes doubt himself. But Walt would pull him self up again. He would only take his comments, no one else’s. He wouldn’t care what anyone said, not even critics. Walt didn’t just believe in his cartoons but his life long dream: Disney Land. Even though he was in debt at the time, over 10,00 dollars, he knew it was the right feeling in his gut. I mean, look at Disney Land now! Its no where near failure! So as you can see, the word “dream” would fit perfectly with Walt Disney. Just like a cup of cool milk with a warm cookie that just came out of the oven. 🙂

An abstract noun that describes my biography of Confucius’s life is… abstract. That, is not the only definition, but a definition of many, many abstract nouns that came together in his life. Unity, Balance, Peace, Out of the Box, Different From the Rest and Positive. Yes, there are many more, but I won’t list them. WAY too many. As if Confucius’s life was insignificant. Just too many words to describe him, his actions, his thoughts and his life overall. One word comes to mind, abstract.
He was born Chi’u Kung and died Kung Fu Tse, or Confucius. IF ANYTHING, CALL HIM “MASTER”!!!!!!!!!!! He has the right to be called that, and out of due respect, we should do so. Why you ask? After all, he DID start Confucianism, and that has got to stand for something. Also, he was a philosopher. What about his life quotes? (See brainyquote.com/Confuciusquotes)
He was a great man with great principle. China and the world will remember him as exactly that. Some people take advantage of him, saying Confucius says…****************. They say horrible things. Don’t do this. He is honorable, and if you say those things, you dishonor him and yourself.
Confucius was unique. He was willing to teach man what had not been taught yet. He truly, truly, was a great man.

The one word that summarizes my book is motivation. After Wayne got injured, he knew that it could be his last chance at hockey. He motivated himself. One quote is, “Hockey has been part of my life since I was 6.” Wayne knew that no other players had ever recovered from an injury this bad, and some retired early. The second quote is, “I’ve always been motivated from within. I’ve always had to prove myself. I really push myself to prove people wrong. My whole career I’ve been ‘too small’ and ‘too slow’, ever since I was 10.” If Great Gretzky never motivated himself to return, this story wouldn’t be as interesting. He wouldn’t grow as a person, and people would stop watching hockey. Wayne’s back injury was like a piece of the world ending, in that case, the hockey world. He knew he had to impress, but most of all, he wanted to do what he loved. That was hockey. That was Wayne Gretzky’s life, and he could not lose it. Motivation was one of the only things that helped him pull through.

I would say that Marie Ahnighito is being understanding. All Marie wanted is to be with her father but his dream of being the first person to make it to the North Pole got in the way of it. An example of this is when she let her father go on another trip to try to reach the North Pole and the conversation they had. “Honey, I know that me being away is hard on you but this is my dream that I want to reach.” Peary said to Marie.
“I know so I don’t want to hold you back. You can go. But, be back as soon as you can, and be safe.” Marie responded. Marie also had to deal with the constant change in lifestyle, moving back and forth from America and the Arctic.
When her father once again wanted to try for the North Pole Marie wrote him a letter asking him to not go, even though she knew that it wouldn’t change his mind what so ever,
    She wrote, ” Daddy-
I know the papers are not always right, but i read that the Peary Arctic club are trying to get your consent to go north again. I know that you will do what pleases Mother and me and that is to stay home with us. i have been looking at your pictures it seems ten years and i am sick of looking at them. I want to see my father. I don’t want people to think me an orphan. Please think this over
    -Marie”
If i was in Marie’s position I would be doing the same exact thing. I don’t know how I would be able to live without my father there, and Marie must of had deep understanding to let her father go in the end.

Worked hard for it and kept his eye on the prize until he finally got to his goal to making it to the majors and proving himself by getting a hit. ” Jackie Robinson has finally made it to the majors,” one of the black newspapers said and ” Do you think you can do this Jackie,” Branch Ricky asked Jackie and Jackie’s reply was “Yes.” These two quotes shows Jackie was ready to go into the majors and that he was determined to pursue getting his first hit and being able to prove that black people are just as good at baseball as whites and he did eventually prove it and now blacks are all over the major leagues.

One other word that describes Jerry would be determination. Jerry was very determined to win a super bowl and was determined to get into a good school. Jerry was glad to go to to the school he went to. Jerry’s college was very good with academics and a little good with sports. If Jerry didn’t go to the college he did he probably would of been a builder. When Jesse tried out for the Olympics he said’’ I was upset with my times but then I realized that I was able to compete with some of the fastest people on the earth.’’ Jesse was also determined. He would train for hours on just having the perfect start. Jesse Owens coach would always tell him ‘’ Run to beat yourself not to beat the other people.’’ Jesse’s determination helped him to win four gold medals in the Olympics. His skill also did because if he wasn’t so skilled he wouldn’t have gone to the Olympics.

The word that best describes the hidden children is probably bravery. Throughout my whole book, they were showing examples of this. One example is when they were in hiding. the kids were put in dirty, unsafe places, which some people thought they could never survive in. Edith Knoll was one of the lucky ones. She got to be in hiding with her mother, but it was still very traumatizing. She had to hang in there, just like all the other hidden children. “Why? What is happening? And my mom tried to toughen me up and said, this is life. And I said to myself, this is life? How come? And I never asked that question again.” Edith Knoll remembers. Another example of bravery is when the hidden children were taken away from their families. Everyone was allowed to take 2 items, some children got lost on the way to “hospitality”, some people got there alright, but no one was okay mentally, “One very early morning, two men appeared and told us to take two belongings. Instead of school, i was taken to prison. The men seperated the adults from us children. It was very horrible. The next morning, we were marched to the Polish border.” Gisele Warshawsky remembers.

The word that summarizes my book is compassion determination and she was grateful, because she always wanted to save luna, and never took things for granted, also never backed down eventually she did save luna. One quote that shows gratefulness, “ When your life is threatened, your life is never the same. I suddenly saw everything in a new light. All the time and space I had taken for grated became precious. I realized that I had always been looking ahead and planning instead of making sure that every moment counted for something. I also saw that had I not come through (the accident) the way I did, I would have been very disappointed with my empty life.“ and this quote shows determination and compassion“ When I first saw Luna for the first time, I really felt what it was like to be alive, to feel connection to all life.” This shows compassion determination and how she was grateful, because it says how much she really felt the trees and how much she admired them. It showed how she felt about what she did with the trees. It showed how she didn’t take anything for granted because of her accident. If that did not happen she would of thought about life differently then she does now. She really does feel a huge connection to the trees and how she needs to save them. Thats why those words summarize the whole story of Julia Butterfly Hill.

I think the theme that best describes the book is determination, because of Adeline’s determination to get her family to like her. Her sister is always teasing her, and saying she is unlucky, because when she was born her mother died. Her dad never notices her, and her stepmother absolutely hates her. One time her stepmother slapped her, because her friends followed her home, and her stepmother thought she invited them over. Adeline tried to tell her she had no clue they were following her, but her stepmother didn’t believe her. Her father even whipped her for lying to her stepmother (which she really wasn’t). Adeline, after all that, was determined and never gave up. She tried hard to get the best grades in her class, always followed her stepmother’s rules and did whatever her siblings asked her to do. One day her aunt said, “mark my words anything is possible”. Adeline said, “I will study hard, I promise”, and throughout her life she always kept that promise. “When I go back to school I’ll try even harder”. That is the promise she made for her grandfather.

Jesse Owens, a professional Olympic track athlete, is a very determined person. He worked hard; he GOT TO SCHOOL before six in the morning, just to train, starting even when he was in 6th grade, because he had to work a part-time job after school. He also practiced and practiced, working extremely hard to get a better technique and more skill. “Every morning,” Owens recalled, “I got up with the sun, ate my breakfast before my mother and sisters and brothers, and went to school, winter, spring, and fall alike to run and jump and bend my body this way and that for Mr. Charles Riley.” Riley was Jesse’s track coach, who helped him achieve his goal. Owens did all of this against the fact that he should have quit school to help his family in the Great Depression; he should have decided that six was too early to get to school, but he didn’t.

All the way until he got to high school and collage, Jesse Owens was faced with numerous problems that got in his way like his grades, the money issue, and his sicknesses. He determination to keep on running, his determination to get an education, his determination to stay alive through the winters without the medicine he needed, brought him up to be the incredible person he was in the 1936 Olympic Games. During the long jump Olympic competition, Jesse showed his determined thoughts that he had. He said, “I decided that I wasn’t going to come down. I was going to fly. I was going to stay up in the air forever. “ Jesse won that event from pure determination.

My main character Albert Einstein = determanation. This is because he spent most of his life being doughted be the people around him, and wanted to prove all those people wrong. Even as a child he was disliked and doughted his teacher even said once: “Your presence in this classroom destroys the respect of the other students!” And even when he went to college his abilitys were doughted, his professor in college said: “You are a good learner Einstein, but you are not fit for physics.” So through out his life time he was determined to prove to all of the people who doughted him wrong. And that is why I think he represents determanation and the will to fight on.

I think that the word that best describes Harry Houdini is courageous. He always took on new challenges, no matter what they were. He would do any escape people asked him to do. Nothing would make him give up his dream. People would give him handcuffs to escape from and he would. He even hung off the side of a building in a straitjacket and escaped. He was capable of staying under water for an hour and a half. This showed his courage to do something that could possibly kill him. He risked his life almost every day, and was hurt a lot in his career. The disease that ended his career and life was caused by a burst appendix from his last show. The escapes were amazing and nobody who wasn’t courageous would ever do them. Houdini did this for the love of magic and the reaction people had to it. Nobody thought anybody could do these tricks, but all they really needed was a little courage.

Helen Keller can definitely be described as brave. I think that she was brave because even though she became blind and death, she never stopped trying to learn the english language. For example, she was brave enough to go to the Perkins Institute in Boston and meet new people. She was also brave enough to attend the Radcliffe college. No other blind or death person had ever attended that college before. Helen said, ” I knew that there would be obstacles to conquer.” Helen was brave enough to conquer those obstacles.
I also think that Helen can be described as dedicated. I think that Helen was dedicated because she wanted to learn the english language. For example, when the pump’s water poured down on Helen’s hand, Helen immediately dropped to the ground and wanted the water’s name. This example shows that Helen was eager to learn language. Helen said, “Suddenly I felt a misty consciousness as of something forgotten- a thrill of returning thought.” Helen was very dedicated to learning words.

My person is Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was a very determined and brave woman. Not only for going through slavery, but, Harriet was also described this way for other reasons.
For instance, Harriet was brave in a few incidents. She was brave for running away and for traveling back to Maryland over 13 times for others, when she could have been caught and killed any one of those times when trying to free slaves. When Harriet ran away she quoted, “I gave one jump out the door, and I saw they came after me, but I just flew, and they didn’t catch me.” Not only this but the fact that Harriet turned back after a while, facing her angry masters, knowing she was going to get beaten, was very brave.
Harriet was also very determined. When Harriet wanted to be free someday, she was determined, and it happened. Also when she was a conductor of the Underground Railroad, Harriet was determined to get all her passengers to freedom, no matter what. When Harriet was determined, Harriet did this too; she had never lost a passenger. Harriet always said to the passengers, “If you are tired, keep going; if you are scared, keep going; if you are hungry, keep going; if you want to taste freedom, keep going.

Another quote from the book is “Louise’s grades even began to fall as he spent more and more time working on his system. Elizabeth I, the last of the Tutors in rein, would best be described as “patience” She waited 25 years of her life to become queen. She even sentenced to the tower of London, and stayed there for over 2 months, not knowing if she would come out alive. She was suspected of crime against her older sister, Queen Mary. She had 2 older siblings, who ruled before her, almost killing her chances of ever being queen.

I would say Elizabeth is patient because she waited all of her life for one moment, and had a few bumps on the way. She was calm and quiet, and she didn’t try to speed up the process, which saved her numerous times. She waited for her brother to die, to get out of the tower of London, and to wait for her sister to die. She waited for 25 years, but when it was over, it paid off. Big time. She got to be queen for over 45 years, making the Elizabethan times to golden age of England. Patience was the key to her success, literally. If she didn’t have patience, she wouldn’t have been queen, she would have been executed in the tower of London about 7 months before she became queen. That’s why I think the one abstract noun to describe her would be “patience”.

Quotes: All my possessions for a moment of time. – She gave up everything she had for that one moment when she became queen.
“A clear and innocent conscience fears nothing.”- This describes how she felt in the tower of London, when she knew she was innocent, but she was still in prison

I would think that the best abstract noun that describes Derek Jeter is confident. I chose this abstract noun because Derek is a person who likes to surprise people with stuff, one time he did that was when he dosed the Yankee’s owner with a bottle of 1989 champagne during an interview right after they won the World Series. Now a lot of people would have the nerve to soak the Yankee’s owner but after that Jeter said “I am able to take risks since I am both brave and confident” There’s also a habit that coaches try to break Jeter from. That habit is that Jeter always talks to the kids near the Yankee dugout for advice and encouragement. Whenever a coach tries to get him to stop Derek just says “Hey it’s just a habit of mine”.

I think the best abstract nouns that describe Prudence Crandall would be courage and determination. I chose these words because all throughout my biography, Prudence is going through some very hard times. She has to make many difficult decisions such has having to decide if she should enter Sarah Harris into her school or not. She wants to help black people but she knows that the town would be furious. Also, the whole town is against her decision of entering a BLACK student into her school, but no matter what gets in her way, her courage and determination doesn’t stop. Some quotes that prove she is determined and courageous are, “The school may sink, but I will not give up Sarah Harris.” This showed determination and courage because despite the threats of losing her school, she refused to let down Sarah. Another quote was, “In January, 1833 a new student named Sarah Harris took her seat at one of the desks in Prudence’s classroom.” This showed determination and courage because this was when she finally decided to enter Sarah into her school even though she knew that the town would be furious. Today, Prudence is our state heroine and will always be remembered for her great bravery and determination no matter what obstacles she had to face.

I would describe my subject, Dr. Suess, as persevered or determined. Everybody knows him, though doesn’t know the rough road it took for a shy boy named Ted to become the Dr. Suess we know today. He is definitely determined; 27 different publishers rejected his first book before it was accepted. For some of his other books he had the challenge of getting them accepted, read, and used by society. When Ted was in high school, his art teacher told him his artwork was terrible and that he would never learn to draw correctly. Ted said later in an interview “It’s the only reason I went on [in the field]-to prove that one teacher wrong.” Ted used a very negative remark about his drawing and used it as determination to move forward. When he published his most famous book, The Cat in the Hat, teacher’s disapproved of it and thought it was way to silly and crazy to be used as a learning tool. Ted was once again determined to have his hard work used by society, so Ted came out and said, “Most every child learning to read has problems, and I am saying to them that reading is fun.”

Another example of him being determined to be able to succeed was he was always one of the shortest players on the field, if not the shortest and, he had the ball in his hands on almost every play when kids double his size and double his weight were sprinting towards him. And he wasn’t only determined to getting to the pros he was also determined to do well in the pros and example of this was when he was the star of his team (the Dallas Cowboys) and their quarterback Troy Aikman had just gotten hurt going into the playoffs. In the game before the playoffs started he was hit and dislocated his shoulder. All the Cowboys fans were convinced he would be out for the rest of the season and that their team would never make it to the Super Bowl without the two best players. A few quotes from Vincent van Gogh are, “I shall be poor. I shall be a painter; I want to remain human.” He was so dedicated to his work that he kept on painting even though it didn’t earn him much money. “What appeals to me most is the portrait, the modern portrait”. Van Gogh’s many portraits are well-known. The last quote I would like to discuss is: “I am working with calm and steady enthusiasm.” I mention this quote because it seems like he didn’t want to rush his art. He wanted to put the painting he saw in his mind on the canvas and not rush his creativity. These quotes I’ve shared give us a sense of how Vincent van Gogh thought and a look at how he chose to live his life.

As a kid he didn’t have a lot of friends and skipped 2 grades, so it made it hard to meet those new friends. He also had to go to war then, got a call from his mom telling him this is the last time they would be talking. Can you imagine that? Also his whole life hearing his parents say to him your not going to be a cartoonist your going to work at the family barber shop. Also showing the company his art and how he was gonna name it “Lil Folks”, but no they wanted “Peanuts” so thats what they named it. His teachers would even tell him “One day Charles your going to be a artist”. That saying always was in his mind when he doubted himself. But in the end his parents realized that maybe he should be artist. In the end he came out strong winning the award he wanted.

Because Joe worked hard to show his coach that he was ready to play in the NFL no matter how much doubt was holding him back. One of the quotes that clearly states how Joe worked hard is the last sentence of the book. “No one ever worked harder than Joe himself.” This shows that many people who are in the NFL may be very good players but because of that they didn’t have to try as hard as Joe to get in to the NFL and start. Another quote from the story is “No one took more time to prepare for a career then to actually play your career more then Joe.” This shows that Joe’s hard work could beat anyone’s talents.

Most of the things she did were to prove that women were strong not weak. She wanted to prove her point and went above and beyond to do so. In dangerous situations she would tell herself, ” Come on Amelia get it together, you can do it.” Amelia never gave up no matter how life threatening the situations became. For example on her solo flight across the Atlantic ocean her altimeter broke, she flew into a storm so she decided to go above it but her wings froze, and her engine was then a ring of fire. Amelia was also casual about her career, one morning she said to her husband,” G.P. would you mind if I flew solo across the Atlantic solo?” That is why Amelia is so determined!!!

  56. The best abstract noun that describes Michael Chang is definitely determination. Michael Chang would fight through every match even when he was in physical pain. He would never stop training to be the best tennis player he could be. When fans said he couldn’t do something, he proved them wrong and did it. “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try, try, try again,” says Michael. He always says never give up until you’ve stopped breathing. There was never a time when Michael stopped believing in himself. He faced many challenges, such as his height and money for him to train. But, he never looked back. He made do with what he had. Of course there were times when he was unsure of something. Maybe he was nervous, but Michael didn’t let his emotions slow him down at all. It is amazing that he played so many professional matches and his first was just at age 15. Michael proved to many Americans and Asians that practice makes perfect but only when you try during practice. Michael’s coaches remember that he never would slack off. Even during sprints and foot work drills. Michael says, “I’m a competitive person and it is in my nature to try hard in every match I play. The only time I’m not competitive is when I’m playing against my mom.” Michael was a great supportive kid, with a love for a great sport.

Roald Dahl didn’t want to go to boarding school because he was nervous but his mother made him. In the end, it ended up being almost a good thing that he went to boarding school because he always wrote letters to mother. This helped him get over his homesickness but also inspired his love of writing which led to a career as an author many years later.

A few quotes from my book that show that Roald Dahl is brave are, “My mother got the message. She kissed me on the cheek and said goodbye and climbed right into the taxi.” This shows that Roald Dahl is brave because he let his mother drop him off at boarding school and didn’t protest. I know that if I was going to boarding school I would be really sad and wouldn’t want my parents to leave. Another quote from my book is, “My nose had been cut almost clean off my face.” This really shows that Roald Dahl is brave because his sister got in a motor car accident and Roald Dahl was very badly injured. His nose was barely attached to his face. He went flying through the rear windshield and was cut by glass.

He was famous throughout the world. His breathtaking, amazing, powerful and beautiful left his enormous audeiences in complete awe, and pleasure. When Ludwig was young, he was treated terribly by his father who was an alcoholic. Also his mother died when he was very, very young. Ludwig Van Beethoven’s largest conflict was that he became COMPLETLY DEAF!!!! He could not hear AT ALL!!! But he still persevered, and pushed on. When Ludwig Van Beethoven was deaf, he composed some of his most spectacular and famous pieces of music ever!!!!! I thought accomplishment decribed all of this perfecly. My book is called, “The Wold at her fingertips.” It is about Helen Keller. In my mind, the abstract noun that best describes my protagonist, Helen Keller, is determined or determination. This sums up Helen Keller because whenever a optical is placed in front of her, she looks at it, sums it up, then attempts and usually succeeds in her goal/challenge. Even when it wasn’t a good challenge, like when my book said that Helen claimed to be “the phantom,” and was wild and reckless- she wouldn’t let herself be beaten by the obstacle. When the obstacle was a maid, Helen didn’t listen to a person tell her no, she said that she’d go find somebody who would punish the maid, and she did. When Helen Keller was placed with the obstacle of being blind and deaf, it took her quite some time to sum up the problem, but she proved that she could do it with patience and determination. When Helen had wanted to speak, she didn’t try once and be done- but she took that problem, told herself that maybe time wouldn’t be on her side, but patience was. Helen had wanted to go to college, when she received the letter back informing that she didn’t make it to Radcliff- it was determination that had her apply again. It was that speck of determination that pushed her through. When a reporter asked Helen what helped her get through to apply again, Helen said, “I choose to override the objects.” She went on telling herself; I can do it, I can do it, like the little train that could told himself.

  61. One word that best describes Anne Frank is fear. I chose this word because Anne lived in fear of Hitler and the nazis. “I cried, why would they take someone so young?”. Every day Anne was forced to be very quiet, she couldn’t even go to the bathroom during the day! Every little move she made could cost her her life. Anne was crammed in a little hiding space with many other people. Imagine that. Wouldn’t you be afraid? Anne wrote in her diary when she thought she heard someone coming upstairs “my heart skipped a beat!”. This shows one of the many, many , many, many, many, many times Anne felt very, very startled, afraid, and nervous. Anne lived most of her extremely short life in fear and discomfort. I think the most fearful moment of Anne’s life was when the nazis came and took them away to a concentration camp. Anne probably was unsure about what would happen to her and her family.

He suffered from depression. He was still able to continue his work and entertain readers every day. During the life of the Peanuts strip, Schulz took only one vacation, a five-week break in late 1997. At its peak, Peanuts appeared in more than 2,600 newspapers in 75 countries. That was just true proof of his commitment. He stubbornly refused to hire an inker or letterer, saying that “it would be equivalent to a golfer hiring a man to make his putts for him.”
Even after he was diagnosed with cancer, and treatment made it hard for him to draw, he still did not want to give up. He was saying, “I never dreamed that this would happen to me. I always had the feeling that I would stay with the strip until I was in my early eighties or something like that. But all of sudden it’s gone. I did not take it away. This has been taken away from me.” He later had hand tremors that made his linework shaky. The tremors sometimes were so bad that while working, he had to hold onto the side of his desk with one hand to steady himself.

    I call that true commitment.

For my autobiography, Under a Red Sky, the main character Eva lives in a country (Romania) where she lives in consistent fear of people knowing she and her families are Jews. But because she is strong and sticks through it all she manages to make it to Israel, where she can be free. Because of this I think the themes to my biography are FAITH or HOPE , and FREEDOM. ”How come tourists can visit Budapest but we can’t go anywhere? . . . Why can’t we have fun?” Eva says this as she dreams of traveling to places and being free from the communist party’s control. She hopes for a better future Another quote from Eva is
    “Can I do that?
“Play tennis? Of course, I’ll teach you if you like.” Says her father
    “No! Chant the torah.”
“What on earth for? Girls aren’t obligated to chant anything.”
    “What if I want to?”
    “Suit yourself’
This shows how Eva expressed her want to learn all about the Jewish culture, even go above and beyond to understand it. Her want to learn shows hope through faith in Jewish teachings, and eventually allows her to become free my moving to Israel.

The abstract noun that best describes my character (Lois Lowry) is courage. I chose this word because it took so much bravery and strength to stand up to some kids at school. For years and years, Lois was made fun of by bullies at her school. When she would try to get away or ignore them, they would still tease her. So, one day after school, kids were tormenting Lois. They were calling her mean names and making rude remarks. For the first time, Lois believed in her self and stood up for herself. She told them this: “Stop! I am who I am and you can’t change me!” I think that it took a lot of courage for Lois to do that, because she was very self-conscious. “I was never like the other kids at the school,” Lois once said as she looked back on her life. If I were Lois, I don’t know if I would be able to do something like that. She should be very proud of what she did, and that is why the abstract noun that best describes Lois Lowry is: COURAGE!!

I think the abstract noun that best describes my book is creative and caring because P.T. Barnum was always coming up with really creative ideas for his circuses like the greatest show on Earth, he thought about putting dancing elephants and tigers that can do a backflip in his circuses. Thats creative because in the 1800’s, no educated gentleman would have ever thought of that. Or much less, making a circus! I think all of those creative ideas went
into the making for everyone to be more creative. Also, Barnum was caring you could tell he was pretty religious too by his motto: “Love God and be Merry” He loved his circus. He was a tremendous show man all over the world and was an Idea generator. Thats why circuses became so popular and he only cared about money and his circuses. “We were a world unto ourselves” he said. And the really were. He even made a fake mermaid and let a lion loose in a tent! People thought he had something wrong with him, but he only did it because of his fans and his circuses to make them his because his thoughts made Barnum’s circuses unique.

I would say that Bill Gates is independent and determined. He did everything basically on his own, even as a kid.”When he got his first rocking chair he went right to it, with no help. Bill also never gave up, when he set a goal, he would fight until there was no time left, that is why he is so successful. Now no body wants to be in business with him.”Bill Gates, I’d hate to be in business with him, but as a consumer it’s hard not to like him” said,” said Nick Sullivan of Home Office Computing.

Bill Gates never gave up even when the odds were against him, at one point his own father didn’t beleive in him. Since Bill did not give up he made a billion dollar business from scratch. So I think he has bragging rights.

Napoleon is very bold and has a ambition to be on the offinsive. For example, He was always the one attacking at Waterloo in 1815. In Italy he always attacked the Austrian army when they just arrived and unprepared. He attacked many armies even though he was outnumbered 3 to1, but still won. He bullyed anyone who made fun of his small size and Corsican accent, a very bold move. He tried to invade Russia, a country which has never been invaded before, but he reached the farthest than anyone else did in history.

In my book the most evident abstract noun is overcoming. John F. Kennedy overcame a lot in his life. He overcame his childhood that was filled with sickness to becoming a politician. He also overcame being over shadowed by his brother and being doubted to become the President of the United States. John overcame his back problems to do many elections and be a very active person. John overcame his fear of dyeing to die fearless. “A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on.” This was an idea that he’d never give up and he would overcome. John would have never been 35th President of the United States if he didn’t overcome. “We should not let our fears hold us back from pursuing our hopes” these words kept him motivated when times were tough. We know John F. Kennedy because he did overcome and that is what made him so famous.

The abstract word that best describes Marie Curie is determination. I chose this word because Marie Curie was very determined to get a gram of radium, or radioactive material. It takes hard work, and a lot of time to produce a real sample of it. No one had ever done it before. One quote that shows she is detirmend is, “Yet is was in this old, miserable shed where we had the best and happiest years of our life, devoting our intire days to our work.” I could never devote an intire day to work, and I don’t know many people that could! Another quote that shows she is determined is, “Sometimes I had to spend a whole day mixing a boiling mass with a heavy iron rod, nearly as large as myself.” This shows Marie Curie was very dedicated to her work, and was very determined to get her work done, and accomplish her life-long goal.

My biography is about Roald Dahl. He was a young student when he wrote his 1st and 2nd book. He was born in Wales, September 13, 1916. When he went to his 1st school he loved it he met new friends and even got to go to a candy shop on the way to school. While he was at school he got ideas to write his books. His first book was The Gremlins, but soon enough he wrote his second book in a English boarding school called Repton. His idea for his second book was great and that is what this book is about. To describe my book with an abstract noun about Roald Dahl’s childhood, and how he wrote his second book would be, determination. I chose this word because his conflict was about how his life was rough and how determined he was to finish his second book.

My children’s book character is Andy Warhol. He was a pop artist. One word that describes Andy would be different. As a kid he never exactly “fit in”. On his first day of kindergarten a little girl actually hit him! Even when he grew up and went to college he was very shy and nobody wanted to be his friend. When he grew up to be working nobody would buy his art or paintings because the were different and once he said, “I like boring things, I like to repeat things over and over again,” not a lot of people like boring things. They normally like spontaneous things that catch the eye and excite them. He also once said, “In the future everybody will be famous for 15 minutes”. Not many people thought like that when he said it even though now it’s a widely accepted quote it wasn’t before. That’s why there’s a wide range of people who like and dislike him because nobody really truly gets his aspect of life.

My person was Muhammad Ali. The theme of my book would probably be best described as determination. Ali never gave up boxing even when things were rough. It was as if the whole world was against him since he was black. Ali was also a bit obnoxious saying “I am the greatest,” all the time. Ali was also just a little too cocky and that is why the sports writers didn’t like him very much. Ali even said “If you kill my dog, you better hide your cat”. Another quote I thought was cocky was “Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” This is why I think Ali was cocky determined and obnoxious.

My biography is on the amazing Diana Spencer. Something that summarizes the theme of the book, and Diana Spencer would be definitely charity. Diana loved helping people by either sponsoring or starting many different charities, whether it’s for AIDS victims or victims of natural disaster, Diana loved to help. She also did some great things, just talking and relating to people with unfortunate sicknesses. She also loved helping out with taking care of children, and she just loved being around children in general. “Anywhere I see grief, that’s the place where I want to be,” she once said in an interview. Also one of her nannies described the young Diana said. “Diana was awfully sweet with the little ones, always caring for them, and the children that she took care of just adores her.” and still for her long life Diana loved to take care of children.

The abstract noun that best describes George Schaller is compassion. I think this because he had a dream when he was young that all of the animals in the world would be safe and healthy. Through all of the pain of seeing animals suffer his love and compassion led him to help and save just a few at a time. As George started to save the animals so many people just kept hunting them and ruining their habitat. AT one point he thought that he really would no longer be able to do anything. I mean, what help am I doing? He would think. But then he remembered the animals that he did save. The ones that he gave a second chance to, and realized even though you will not be able to save every single one you still will save so many along the way. A Quote is “The gorillas looked so human like it was unbearable. I couldn’t just let their habitat be taken away when they are so much like us.” This shows compassion because he wanted to save the gorillas and give them the same rights we have.

The abstract noun that best describes Adolf Hitler is wickedness. Hitler killed millions of innocent Jews because he needed to blame someone for his own failures. One of Hitler’s failures was his attempt to take over Great Britain. This failed, and he needed someone to blame it on. He blamed it on Jews, who he thought were the cause of Germany’s problems. He thought he needed to exterminate all of the Jews in Europe. “One must act radically. When one pulls out a tooth, one does it with a single tug and the pain quickly goes away.” Hitler ordered his men to round up all the Jews in Europe into cattle cars and bring them to the ghetto or to a concentration camp, disease-ridden places where Jews were forced to work without food or water, or put to death. “One must not have mercy with people who are determined by fate to perish,” Hitler said.

The abstract noun that would give Joe Namath would be “Confidence”. For example, before the SuperBowl Joe was trash talking and saying that the Jets would win. He never really doubted that he would lose. “Maybe we shouldn’t play, “Namath said wryly. “But you will, “said Jack Perkins, telecaster on CBS. “We’ll play like mad, ” was Joe’s reply. He always had faith and he was always positive that he would win. He didn’t care what people said about the Jets and that they will lose. He just kept going. “The Jets will win and I guarantee it,” Joe said. No one thought the Jets would win the SuperBowl, but Joe didn’t care. He believed they could win. In high schoool, Joe led his teams to the championship. Joe was probably afraid of going up against big guys but he had confidence in himself. Joe was a very confident person.

My abstract noun for Joe Louis is strength. Not only is he strong like muscles because he’s a boxer and he had a job to carry refrigerators to people house. He is also strong through tough times like segregation and money issues. When his family did go through money issues, he got a job to earn money for his family. Also when people doubted him in the boxing ring, he amazed and surprised everyone with his talent. Joe once said, “When your black, you have to be superman, you have to be at the top and do better to prove yourself.” Another quote was, “I want to be special, I want to be somebody.” This shows that he was determined to be great and to prove him self to the world and get whit people on his side. Which they did, he received mail from white kids who wanted to be just like him. Which proves that with strength, you can overcome anything

The abstract noun that I chose was determination. I chose this word because Rosa Parks was determined to end segregation. She didn’t give up hope, even when the government killed people because of their resistance it. She didn’t even stop after she got arrested; in fact, her getting arrested was what lit the spark to her anti- segregation movement. She wanted segregation to end and I think her anger towards the government was one of the things that kept her going. Rosa did show true determination, and as a result the government finally surrendered, and the racial segregation on public transportation ended. The reason segregation on buses ended was because of Rosa Parks’ riots. She spoke out for all the people and made everyone realize how unfair segregation actually was and want to make a difference in the world. This proves that determination has a very strong power and that if you use it correctly, it can do very good things.

My abstract noun for Gandhi is perseverance. This is because Gandhi kept on fighting for what he believed in. When things got bad, he always knew what to do and how to help. “We must become the change we want to see”. He wanted the whole world to live peacefully. “You may never know what results come of your action, but if you do nothing there will be no result”. He was a man longing for freedom. Why did he persevere? He knew that life in India couldn’t go on the way it used to. He was dedicated to his job in life. He was like his own charity. The people that beat him and threw him in jail didn’t bother him. Non-violence was his army and he used it to succeed greatly in his happy and religious life. Thank you Gandhi you reminded us what is important in life.
